How to Manage a Busy Schedule: Helpful Tips and How-To’s

By Jovana Ho, Epic Intern

The beep of your alarm clock that wakes you every morning. The ring of your phone that reminds you you’re late to another meeting with an acquaintance, a friend, or a family member. The honk of a car following close behind you, urging you to go just a little bit faster. Only a few examples of the rush of everyday life. Agendas and planners and iPhones and Blackberries. They’re all enabled to help us sort what we have to do from what we can put off for just a little longer. Can I pick up the dry cleaning after work? Can I move the interview to next week? Can I meet my mother on Tuesday? Can I finish this on time?

Time.

It’s something we all want a little more of. It’s something that there’s never enough of. Something we wish we could pause, rewind, or replay. Unfortunately, we aren’t granted that luxury. Therefore, the way time is spent is invaluable.

Time management is key to a successful future. Prioritizing your tasks makes it easier to get the most out of the little time we all have. Just as we would never expect a single person to fix every little problem in the world, we, ourselves, cannot expect to solve every issue that comes our way. We must, first, focus on the tasks at hand and follow through until they are completed. Then, we tackle the next task.

While some things will take longer than others, we must keep in mind that we cannot have tunnel vision. Multi-tasking is just as essential as prioritizing your tasks. There are smaller things we feel we can put off because they aren’t as important, and there are bigger things that we put off because we dread doing the actual task. Keep in mind that while certain things involve long processes, there are always smaller tasks that must be attended to as well.

In the end, we might not have time for just everything, but we can always make time for the things that count.
